What is Burlesque?

Burlesque was born in theatres where actors would reenact comical or risque versions of well know plays, often with a political undertone.
As burlesque developed and showing more than a bit of ankle became acceptable, burlesque became more of a tease. Artists would play with the audience for as long as possible before removing any of their costume.
These days burlesque can incorporate absolutely anything and acts themes can range from eras in time, to mythological beasts to a political message.
Vintage glamour being one of the most popular references, performers dress dripping in gems, feathers and any other luxurious fabrics they can get their hands on. Generally performers never strip further than tassels and a thong, making it legal in normal venues and tasteful (depending on the act!) These reasons being why it has such a large female following.

Burlesque: is a literary, dramatic or musical work intended to cause laughter by caricaturing the manner or spirit of serious works, or by ludicrous treatment of their subjects.^[1] The word derives from the Italian burlesco, which itself derives from the Italian burla – a joke, ridicule or mockery. 

Does it have to include nudity?
